What's a Stretch Code and Why We Should be Paying Attention

This session will explore some of the recent activities in Massachusetts and New York, and the potential impact across the country. While the rapid expansion of building performance standards will positively accelerate retrofits of existing buildings at the local level, there are also new “stretch” codes popping up that deviate from national model codes without the same level of technical input or rigor. If done incorrectly, some could lead down a backwards path to a new era of buildings that are actually worse for occupant health and well-being.

This presentation addresses the new glazing and fenestration technologies that can be used to address building energy efficiency goals and on-site renewable energy production. The COVID-19 pandemic is also having a significant impact on federal and state OSHA regulations which are evolving in response. The Window and Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA) remains highly engaged in the legislative and regulatory arena on behalf of the window, door and skylight industry. In this session, WDMA’s advocacy staff will provide an in-depth look at key issues facing Washington and the industry as a whole and where they’re headed. Topics include:
- COVID-19 relief legislation,
- Energy tax credits,
- Employer liability,
- Other important legislative issues

ANSI recently approved the 2020 NGBS, the third version to date, with an expanded scope that applies to mixed-use buildings, assisted living facilities, hotels, dormitories, lodging houses, and even monasteries. Workforce Development
What does the construction industry look like moving forward? If the industry wants to grow to meet the ever-changing infrastructure and growing population demands, we need to find ways to recruit and train new craft professionals. This presentation from the American Subcontractors Association (ASA) shows where the industry is headed and provides ideas to grow the number of craft professionals to meet the current and upcoming demands.
The skilled labor shortage continues to challenge the glass and glazing industry, with experienced workers retiring faster than we can replace them. In 2019, the last of the Baby Boomers turned 55, and by 2024, the tail end of this generation will begin retiring. According to the National Construction Center for Education and Research (NCCER), 41 percent of the current construction workforce will retire in 2031. Without a veteran glazier pool to choose from, contract glaziers need to look to the younger generation.
