What's a Stretch Code and Why We Should be Paying Attention
Massachusetts and New York are just the beginning
While we focus on national model codes that dominate the country, there has been an increase in activities at the state and local level that could have a large impact of the built environment – some good, some bad. While the rapid expansion of building performance standards will positively accelerate retrofits of existing buildings at the local level, there are also new “stretch” codes popping up that deviate from national model codes without the same level of technical input or rigor.
Even if well-intentioned with opportunities to push higher performance products, if done incorrectly, some could lead down a backwards path to a new era of brutalist buildings that are actually worse for occupant health and well being.
This webinar will explore some of the recent activities in Massachusetts and New York, and the potential impact across the country.
