Enameled Glass and Spandrel Strength
Featuring industry expert and consultant Chris Barry
Spandrel glass is opaque coated glass used in non-vision areas of a building envelope to conceal columns, floors and other building elements from outside view. Although rare, spandrel glass breakage has led to some controversy in the glazing industry. Is the breakage a result of weakened glass strength caused by mismatch of thermal expansion coefficients of particular enamel compositions and glass? Could the transition from stronger fully tempered glass to heat-strengthened glass play a role? Or is it due to thermal stress, an unintentional consequence of more stringent energy conservation standards?
The use of opaque paints and enamels, low-e coatings, thick insulation and other elements designed for energy efficiency can allow heat to build up as they absorb sunlight, especially when insulating glass
units (IGUs) are installed as spandrel glass. With no ambient air circulating behind the spandrel glass to remove the absorbed heat, the glass temperature will increase much more than in adjacent vision glass where air is freely moving on the room-side.
Chris Barry will discuss the ASTM studies on thermal stress resistance of spandrel, as well as glass and coating specification considerations during NGA Glass Conference: Miramar Beach. Join the conversation by registering today.
